Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) & Assessments
The Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) outline what students are expected to know and be able to do in subjects such as English, Math, Science, History, and Social Studies at each grade level.
To measure student progress, the Virginia Assessment Program provides SOL tests and growth assessments throughout the school year.
Types of Assessments
- SOL Writing Assessments: End-of-Course (EOC) Writing
- SOL Non-Writing Assessments:
- Grades 3–8: Reading and Mathematics
- Grade 5: Science
- Grade 8: Science, Civics & Economics
- End-of-Course (EOC): Reading, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, World Geography, World History I, World History II, and U.S. History
- Integrated Reading & Writing: Included in Grade 5 & Grade 8
- Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP): For eligible students in Grades 3–8 and high school (Reading, Math, Science)

Grades 7–12 testing must occur during the last two weeks of the course (with allowable exceptions).

Parents will receive enhanced score reports within 45 days of the testing window closing.

Additional changes, including SOL scores counting as 10% of grades, are projected for 2028–2029.
